Natural gas is a strategic, reliable and affordable energy source that supports social and economic growth, and enables Asia’s transition to a long-term lower carbon and renewable energy mix. Availability and affordability of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is essential to the energy systems of Asia today and those that will emerge over coming decades.

As Asia is an energy importer, LNG addresses two critical areas.

  1. It ensures the energy security for a range of nations, many of which have been importing LNG for decades. The world’s biggest LNG importers are JapanSouth Korea and China, with Singapore and Taiwan among the other advanced Asian economies that are underpinned by imported gas.
  2. As Asia’s emerging economies move toward lower-carbon futures, LNG is playing an important role, by providing an affordable and reliable energy source as nation’s move away from high-emission coal-based energy.

Natural Gas Compared

Natural Gas is of course, not the only energy source within Asia. Our resources below explore the range of energy sources, comparing them to Natural Gas and discussing how they might be used together.
