The Asia Natural Gas and Energy Association (ANGEA) was formed with a simple purpose:to work with governments, industries and communities in Asia, providing affordable solutions that promote energy security, economic growth and decarbonisation.

This is reflected in our policy priorities:

Highlighting the role of gas in energy security in Asia

Asia is a net importer of energy, dependent on supply from other parts of the world to meet its growing needs. This includes natural gas, a reliable fuel that has been used for many decades in Asia, but one for which regional resources cannot support self-sufficiency.

ANGEA works to highlight the essential role that gas plays now and in the future in powering nations and industries around the region, including advanced economies such as Japan and South Korea as well as the fast growing economies of South and Southeast Asia.

Ensuring sufficient LNG supply for Asia’s energy transition

By replacing coal-fired power with natural gas, Asia’s emerging nations can strike a challenging balance between continued strong economic growth and significant decarbonisation. Their ability to do this and carry hundreds of millions of people out of poverty will depend on availability and affordability of natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

ANGEA works with countries throughout the region, providing support as they develop infrastructure, policies and capacity for LNG imports and large-scale coal-to-gas switching. We also raise awareness of Asia’s growing LNG needs in gas-producing nations elsewhere in the world.

Gas is a highly reliable, flexible and lower-carbon source of baseline power production that is a natural fit in complementing intermittent supply from growing renewable energy sources.

Development of CCS policy and solutions in Asia

Development of at-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions will be critical to achieving global net zero aspirations. It will be particularly important for Asia, where ongoing and long-term economic growth is driving strongly increasing energy demand. ANGEA is working with governments, think tanks, NGOs and industry, to ensure policy settings support investment in CCS across Asia Pacific. We have a strong focus on the development of policies that enable cross-border CCS, where CO2 is captured in one country and then transported to another for storage.

Our Accelerating Cross-Border CCS in Asia Pacific study produced a first-of-its-kind framework that governments and other stakeholders can use in negotiating the agreements that will underpin cross-boundary CO2 transactions.

CCS is a multi-faceted technology for Asia. In addition to supporting decarbonisation of power generation and essential and hard-to-abate industrial processes, it will open up new economic opportunities and drive growth of hydrogen and ammonia as clean burning fuels.

Decarbonising the LNG supply chain

ANGEA’s member companies are spearheading global efforts to reduce emissions along the LNG supply chain, through production, transport and then combustion. This includes identifying and mitigating fugitive methane emissions. ANGEA is a member of the ASEAN Centre for Energy Methane Leadership Program, sharing industry expertise and learnings with regional producers and national oil companies in SEA.

ANGEA and its members work with LNG-importing nations in Asia to identify and implement technologies and techniques that will realise decarbonisation opportunities. This ensures LNG has a real and positive impact in their attempts to reduce emissions and achieve Nationally Determined Contributions.
